This small and light weight reverse osmosis hand pump water filter enables you to remove nearly all contaminations from water including protozoa, viruses, chemicals and most water-soluble substances including minerals, fluoride, lime and salt.
It even enables you to desalinate salt water to use it for drinking.
The filter is run by a hand pump (as the reverse osmosis process requires pressure to work) and requires no external power.
Due to how the process works the third filtration stage has two outlets. One is for the purified water, the other one is waste water that continuously flushes the Reverse Osmosis membrane which is very important for its longevity, especially when using polluted. However, this waste water still has been filtered by the second stage and depending on the cleanliness of the water source still could be used. Alternatively, it can be discarded or directed back into the original contaminated water source.
The membrane housing, has a valve for the flush water at the top that can be set to an open and closed position. For reverse osmosis filtration it is strongly advised to leave it at the open position to ensure good flushing of the membrane.
The membrane can be removed and is a replaceable unit and similar to under-the sink reverse osmosis filters.
If the membrane is removed and the valve put into the closed position the housing can act as a water pump. This then enables you to filter water using the pre filters only, if the water source is not as polluted (most NZ backcountry rivers and collected clean rainwater)
Due to the process, more water is flushed than is filtered, this means that Reverse osmosis is extremely well suited when you have a big source of polluted water or saltwater available. If your water source already is very clean, just using the second stage filter is a good option.
Chlorine can damage the reverse osmosis membrane, it is thus not advised to filter heavily chlorinated water, unless it has been pre-filtered using a carbon filter.
To ensure its longeivety all filter elements should be flushed with clean water, the pump unit disassembled (membrane removed) and all parts left to dry if they are to be stowed away after use to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria inside the filter elements.
